In 2003 Dr. Clokie received a great deal of international attention when his work on the dental problems of Peter Russel resulted in the bottom right of the retired banker’s jaw bone growing seven centimeters using a revolutionary treatment involving bone morphogenetic protein discovered at U.C.L.A. in the 1950s. Russel had lost part of his jaw because of a benign tumor.

Dr. Clokie learned the BMP technique during the 4 years he worked with renowned orthopedic surgeon Marshall Urist. The technique is primarily used for spine fusion surgery. Dr. Clokie began using it to repair jaw bones in 1999.

Dr. Cameron Clokie earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1985. After completing specialty training in 1990, in 1992 he graduated from McGill University with a PhD in bone regeneration as related to dental implants and interface development.

He has performed the bone regeneration technique using bone morphogenetic protein on 8 other people. Currently the BMP is produced by a U.S. biotech firm using cells taken from Chinese hamsters.
