How Sujit Choudhry Became A Renowned Constitutional Lecturer And Speaker

Sujit Choudhry is a renowned lecturer and speaker who is one of the world’s foremost authorities on constitutions. He started the Center for Constitutional Transitions which has built a name for itself as a highly reputable organization that shares the knowledge it develops with policymakers dealing with issues when creating or modifying a nation’s constitution.

He has spoken around the world at conferences and workgroups on constitutional law and politics. He has also served as a constitutional advisor in multiple nations including Ukraine, Nepal, and Tunisia. He is presently a constitutional advisor to the International IDEA organization which supports democracy by helping to create effective and sustainable democracies all over the world.

Sujit Choudhry is originally from Delhi, India. Early in his life, his parents moved the family to Toronto, Canada. His parents always encouraged him to read several newspapers a day and keep up on as much news and opinion as he could. His parents were both college professors and encouraged all of their children to teach one day as well.

At first, Sujit Choudhry intended to enter the medical field. He started attending McGill University as a pre-med student but he ended up becoming more interested in the field of law. After earning his bachelor’s degree he became a student at the University of Toronto and earned an advanced law degree.

Sujit Choudhry also has a graduate degree in law that he earned in 1998 at Harvard Law School. After completing his education he returned to the University of Toronto where he became a tenured professor in 2004. He is now a guest researcher in Germany at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center.

He is an active writer who has written about constitutional matters and politics all over the world. A recent example was writing about the conflict in Spain between the national government and the Catalan government that wanted to secede. Sujit Choudhry asked both sides to work together in good faith and find common ground. The goal was to prevent further violence from occurring and find a peaceful way to resolve the matter.
