An inside look at JD.com’s running chicken initiative

Posted by eastcoop on

For quite a long time now, Wuyi, a county in China’s Hebei Province has been among China’s poorest regions, with the majority of its residents being unemployed. As a way to help improve the living standards of the region and give back to the community, China’s most renowned e-commerce platform, JD.com established the Running Chicken initiative on a 27-hectare farm back in 2016.

The sole purpose of the project was to eradicate poverty in the region through the creation of job opportunities for the residents of Wuyi County. This is a goal that it has achieved effortlessly, as more than 500 families from the region now have a stable source of income. This has also benefitted the county as a whole as it has helped improve its economic status, thereby removing it from China’s poverty-stricken regions. It has however gone on to benefit not only the natives of this region but JD.com as the demand and sales of free-range chicken products has been increasing with each dawn since the launch of the initiative. Jingdong’s customers have also benefitted big time as they now get access to premium quality chicken products hence enabling them to lead a healthy lifestyle.

How the project works

The success of the initiative can be attributed to the perfect teamwork between JD.com and the local farmers. On the one hand, JD.com hires professional breeders who partake the role of tending to the chickens while on the other hand, the locals participate by taking on tasks such as managing to the farms, growing veggies, grain and whatever is required to feed the chicken. The running chicken initiative is different from most chicken programs in that the birds are allowed to roam freely and interact with other chickens at least 50% of the time during the rearing process.

As always, JD.com incorporates innovative technologies to attain its goals, and for this project, the company uses blockchain technology to ensure each bird reaches at least a million steps during rearing so it can spend 50% of its time outdoors. As a result, they make healthier products which are more suited for human consumption. Chicken products from the project are usually delivered right to the client’s doorstep regardless of their location thanks t to Jingdong’s revolutionary logistic network.

Richard Liu Qiangdong Is A Great Businessman

Posted by eastcoop on

Richard Liu recently sat down for an interview with David M. Rubenstein, entitled “An Insight, An Idea”, the well-known co-founder and co-executive chairman for The Carlyle Group, an international alternative asset management firm. The interview concerned nothing but Mr. Liu’s rise to success as an entrepreneur through the growth of JD.com, a major Chinese online retailer also known as Jingdong.

Let’s take a short recap of the interview between Richard Liu Qiangdong and David M. Rubenstein.

Jingdong is up to a lot in 2019

Recently, the United States’ Walmart upgrade its five-percent share in JD.com to 12 percent, making Walmart the company’s largest single investor. The pair of colossal retailers first struck an agreement in 2016.

Just over a year ago, JD.com poured slightly less than $400 million into Farfetch, an online fashion retailer with upwards of 2,000 designers’ selections to choose from. Find Related Information Here.

Jingdong also continues to operate JD Worldwide, a global e-commerce interface that brings international goods to shoppers based in China. The company also continues to have its stock traded on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, one of the largest in the world. The public stock of Richard Liu’s company was initially posted in 2014.

Further, JD.com continues to be one of China’s greatest retailers, all thanks to the crystal-clear leadership of Richard Liu.

The initial stages of Jingdong

Richard Liu Qiangdong founded Jingdong in 1998 as a retail shop specializing in electronics. The small business was located in a busy shopping mall in Beijing, China, the capital of the country.

By 2003, Liu’s creation had grown into a 12-store operation. Soon after store number 12 opened, a severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak ravaged the entirety of China. People didn’t come out to shop as much during the outbreak. Chinese people were also less likely to spend a fair chunk of money while they were out shopping.

The growth of JD.com, post-SARS outbreak

Richard Liu Qiangdong realized that opening up an e-commerce platform was the best move he could make for his fledgling company. In 2004, JD opened up that online shopping platform. It originally specialized in computers and related accessories.
